Double joy at christening of premature twins

SUNDAY marked a doubly joyous occasion for the parents of Sarah and Rebecca Artt- the twin girls were christened a year after their struggle for survival when they were born 12 weeks early.

Their mother Alison Artt, from Coagh but living in Dundee had the identical twins early after she developed an infection. Sarah was a tiny two pounds four ounces, and Rebecca was two pounds ten ounces.

Alison says she was given steroids to develop the girls’ lungs before they were delivered which gave them a fighting chance.

“They were born at 28 weeks at Ninewells Hospital. They were put on a ventilator for 12 hours and then a CPAP machine for five or six weeks,” she said.

“It was a day by day thing, Rebecca took an infection, when she was born her arm was totally white - she had a blood clot in it and they couldn’t get a pulse in it. We didn’t know what would happen- but luckily it came right.

“They were in the premature baby unit for ten weeks and five days. Then we got to take them home, we were extremely lucky. We didn’t have to take them home on oxygen or anything.

“It was amazing. It was wonderful to just go home and be like a normal family.”

The two lucky girls beat the odds and were christened on Sunday at Tamlaght Parish Church in Coagh. Proud parents Alison and Brian Artt, grandparents Arthur and Muriel Gibson, Jim and Ruth Artt continued the celebrations on Monday as the baby girls celebrated their first birthday.
