AS far as experiments go, you'd be wrong not to place all your trust in Glasgowbury.
From the same crowd who brought you a tiny gathering of about 80 people almost 10 years ago, to the behemoth of Eagles Rock as it now sits; came a G Session with a twist last weekend.
Debutants Thrones Of Roll were to kick off, LaFaro were to ride the beast home and Dean Groogan, a local man, would put his DJ hat on for the final fence. And what a ride it was.
There's a point during the soundheck which will sum up the night. The power of LaFaro, midway through Leningrad, send two decorative candles on a nearby bench falling into the adjoining sink. A short time later and Thrones Of Roll with their soundcheck send the one that remains tumbling. Anything you can do...
Later, TOR open to a filling house, laying down a benchmark for the night to come and it's a performance that puts them up there as one of the finest (and until recently, non-well heard of round these parts) rock bands on the scene.
But they've just released an EP and won a battle of the bands competition down the country, and things seem to be on the up. They'll no doubt have taken great joy in breaking the seal on a new series of Glasgowbury G Sessions with as strong a set as we've seen in a while.
Built against girders buried deep in the old school rock tradition, TOR have constructed a contemporary catalogue of material that, with the vocal fronting of Shane, become widely accessible.
Video Store has the makings of an all round hit, Zoo Keeper has them playing with our senses and our funny bone and Forked Fingers is a zombified slow burner that builds to a head thumping conclusion.
Time doesn't stand still for too long and just as we've settled, they send us packing with Dead Dogs Bone, rightfully leaving us wanting more and wholly impressed by a band of whom we know little about. A prestige performance on all counts.
Then LaFaro do that LaFaro thing where they pack the floor and thrill us for close to an hour.
Tupenny Nudger kicks it all off and instantly we're sucked in to their twisted minds, a place where anything goes as long as it rocks you to your core.
Big Kevin continues the twisted trend and Black's humour mixed with his band's uncompromisingly thick sound, is as big, heavy and perfect as we've ever heard it.
As always the sweat runs thick and fast and as our leading men belt into the wee small hours, the quality never weans.
Leningrad is a song that will make them, Jeff Hinton is riff after riff of biss and oldie but a goldie Mr Heskey will have you weak at the knees.
After two G Session supports, LaFaro have proved with ease that they could headline all night, every night.
DJ Deano brings the night to a close with a really rather special set that's short but ultimately sweet. For a man nervous about mixing, the fear doesn't show and you feel the opportunity will be the first in a long line of successes.
Cross-community relations shouldn't be this much fun, should they?
