IN one guise or another they've patrolled the outskirts of the music scene for many a year, always threatening to dip their foot in with something truly serious.
And this week, under the moniker of Pretty Child Backfire, a small collective of Draperstown men will make a shot for the big leagues.
The band, spear headed by Mark McAllister and Ciaran Devlin Rushe with help from Ciaran O'Kane, are a curious mix of dance beats by way of an acoustic side road. And the result is an altogether pleasant one for the many ears who have picked it up so far.
Mark McAllister, the voice behind the operation, spoke to Niall Kerr.
"We've been getting a really good response so far," he says. "It's something different from what we grew up trying to do but we're really enjoying it.
"We wrote this music the way we would like it without really expecting it to appeal to anyone else, but we've got friends - people who we never really thought would have been into this type of music - who really enjoy it."
As a band Pretty Child Backfire have been relatively un-prolific in terms of gigs but already they have the base to launch their debut EP Dancing By Numbers.
"We've very much taken the DIY approach to this release. Every one of the cases has been individually hand made and we're taking a cool headed stance to what we're doing."
It's a refreshing approach for a young band who realise that their destiny is in their own hands.
"The songs came about as Ciaran and I started to experiment a lot, particularly with dance music. We mixed influences and ideas and tried to come up with something new."
But while Daning By Numbers has yet to hit shelves, plans are already afoot for the next effort.
"We're really happy with what we got out of this EP," says Mark. "But we've really pushed it since and the songs we've come up with are even better again so we aim to get another release out in the coming months."
You could be forgiven for thinking a dose of naiveity had set in but Pretty Child Backfire have the reserves that could take them far.
It's not often we get treated to an acoustic based band with a hankering for dance but when we do, it's often an exciting time - see Joe Echo's new material for another example.
And with Mark McAllister on the finest and most adventurous vocal form we've heard from him yet, it's fair to say we're excited about what's to come.
Pretty Child backfire release their debut EP Dancing By Numbers at the Cellar Bar in Draperstown this Friday night (26 June) with support from Jumping Orbit.
Catch them while you can.
