Performing Arts students at the South West College (Cookstown Campus) will present a brand new play, devised scripted, choreographed and directed by the themselves, for one night only at the Burnavon, on Saturday (April 12).
‘Back 2 Black’ is a vibrant exploration of love and relationships against the backdrop of the glittering jazz age and roaring ‘20’s, with costume and staging that evoke the era perfectly. Following the trials and tribulations of the play’s American anti-hero, Robert Baker, and set in New York, this self-scripted, devised and directed tale of murder and intrigue will be a night to remember.
Since September the students have been working hard at developing the play with course tutors, Anne-Marie McFlynn and Caroline Creggan providing expert guidance. The SWC Performing Arts Department provide unique courses run in partnership with the Burnavon Theatre.
Anne-Marie McFlynn, Course Director, told the MAIL: “We offer an exciting combination of practical performance skills in acting, dance and music, alongside academic study. Vocational learning and assessment is embedded across the curriculum. We also cover key backstage skills in sound, lighting, stage management, set design, and business management, so if you want a career in the Creative and Cultural industries, South West College can help you achieving this.”
As part of their studies the students must produce an actual stage show, and are responsible for each and every part of staging the performance from writing the script to sourcing the costumes and music, to acting on the night.
Local aspiring actor and artist, Vitalij S. who plays the role of Robert Baker added: “I always found myself very interested in art, in every form of it, whether it’s fine art, performing, music or literature. For me art is a world where you can escape from the reality and live for a few moments. Frida Kahlo, Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, Pablo Picasso, and Giorgio de Chirico are my biggest inspirations - their art creations are like a dream, a different world that you want to visit. In the show Back 2 Black my character is Robert Baker, the man who is just out of jail, but still goes back to his illegal past and tries to make the business run again. But it’s not easy as it seems for him.”
The other members of the cast are Chris Lowry (Wilson Black), as well as acting Chris has also co-written a WW1 screenplay with fellow class colleague David Mullan; Megan Flack (Myrtle Black); Seánna Nugent (Florence Waller); Jordan Sherrard (James Scott Fitzgerald); Theresa Moran (Ruby Scott Fitzgerald) and Yasmine Casey (Virginia Bloom).
Tickets, priced £10 (£8 concession) are on sale from the Burnavon Box Office on 028 8676 9949 or online at www.burnavon.com.
