Powerful drama for Cookstown
A FANTASTIC new version of JB Keane's, 'Sive' comes to the Burnavon in Cookstown on Friday and Saturday (June 4 and 5).
Staged by the Bardic Theatre of Donaghmore it takes place at 8pm each evening.
Set in rural Ireland in the 1950s, Sive is a young and beautiful orphan who lives with her uncle and his angry, bitter and childless wife. Sive becomes the object of a potential match with an ageing but rich farmer – an arrangement which is every bit as disturbing as its sounds especially when the old rich farmer is more suited to the coffin than the carnal cot.
Sive is a play about contrasts: young and old, wealth and poverty and perhaps most crucial of all good and evil. The play is also a disturbing reminder of the harsh poverty and difficult times in Ireland during 1950’s - a plot which is totally alien to modern audience. However, the bigger dynamics of the piece are universal – sex and money. Set and lit in harsh grey tones, ‘Sive’ is a clear tragedy that never has a real sense of escapism amid the selfishness and greed.
The Bardic’s version of this play is effortlessly solid and entertaining, but after the curtain falls one can’t help feeling surprisingly disturbed by the whole drama.
Tony McCance, Manager at the Burnavon Cookstown said this version of the famous play is guaranteed to shock, amuse and entertain.
“Sive is one of the most famous Irish dramas and we are delighted that drama audiences at the Burnavon will have the opportunity to see it on stage. Couple this with the intensity and professionalism of the Bardic Theatre and you have the perfect night out at the theatre,” he said.
Tickets for ‘Sive’ are selling fast, priced at 10 and 8 concession.
