Young musicians win Irish Youth Music Award

TWO Desertmartin teenagers have won the Paul Clancy young songwriter award at the Irish Youth Music Awards in Dublin.
Thirteen-year-old Ruairi O’Kane and 15-year-old Callum Stewart were competing with 17 other bands.
They were chosen by a panel of judges from the top of the music industry for the best song and were also nominated in the last six for best musical performance despite being the youngest competitors there.
They performed two songs, one written by themselves and the other a cover song by Lost Generation, a Derry band who supported them all through the event.
The boys were ecstatic with their win. Callum who performs vocals and percussion said “it’s a dream to be recognised in such a way by people like Willie Cavanagh MD of EMI Records and Jackie Hayden of Hot Press magazine, we’re still in a daze”
Ruairi who plays guitar said, “We’ve had a fantastic time playing and writing songs together since we met last year but this is definitely the highlight so far”.
As well as receiving a beautifully crafted wood and brass plaque the boys get two days recording at Ashtown Recording Studios in Dublin.
Ruairi and Callum were very keen to thank Youth Action who organised the participants in the Northern Ireland section.
