Sacred Heart pupils get the STEM treatment

SACRED Heart students joined over 200 pupils from across Northern Ireland to take part in a unique Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) careers event.

Run by W5 under the STEM Ambassador Programme, the event was supported by ambassadors from leading local STEM businesses including Almac, BT, Bombardier and Equiniti ICS.

The event consisted of a range of STEM zones focusing on specific STEM career areas, qualifications required and information on job opportunities within Northern Ireland and beyond. Pupils had the opportunity to attend a series of hands-on practical STEM demonstrations, attend STEM lectures and visit information stands to collate information and discuss STEM qualifications and careers with local employers.

Speaking about the event, Mary Carson, STEM Ambassador Programme Manager at W5 said: “I love organising interactive and innovative events like this one as they offer an invaluable opportunity for young people to see the variety of careers available within the STEM sector right HERE in Northern Ireland.

“Feedback from the students has been fantastic with 97% agreeing they learned something new about STEM in the workplace and an impressive 94% indicating they would now consider a career that requires a STEM qualification,” she said.

“These results clearly demonstrate the impact that local businesses can make in terms of influencing and informing young people on how STEM qualifications can lead to exciting and dynamic careers.”

Mary added: “W5 has held the STEMNET contract for a year now and we are making real progress in matchmaking schools and businesses but there still remains an apparent lack of awareness of the opportunities and paths that lead to STEM careers.”
