THE five DUP political representatives for Magherafelt area are accusing republicans of deliterately seeking to raise tension in the area.
Condemning the recent erection of éirígi flags, the councillors say the people of Magherafelt have, with commendable resolve, withstood all that republican aggression has thrown at them over the years and have maintained a unity of purpose to forward
the peaceful development of our community.

"Sadly there are those who cannot lift themselves out of the mire of the past but seek to drag our district into deep division using the myths of yesteryears that have absolutely nothing to offer our society," they say.

"Those who endeavour to fight lost battles of the past are doomed to fail and will not achieve their goal of a United Ireland.

"The vast majority of Ulstermen and women are united in their resolve to remain within the United Kingdom, enjoying all the privileges and blessings that such membership brings.

"We therefore call upon the people of Magherafelt to remain vigilant and withstand the intimidation and threats emanating from this disgruntled rump of republicans who have no electoral support within the community."

The statement is signed by Ian McCrea MLA; Dr William McCrea MP MLA; Mr Paul McLean chairman Magherafelt Council; Anne Forde and Thomas Catherwood.
