MOTORISTS who drive off from service forecourts without paying could end up in court.
Police in Magherafelt this week warned drivers who fail to pay that they could be liable for prosecution.
Area Commander Chief Inspector Steven Reid says: "The vast majority of drive-offs are due to human error and people will pay when it has been
pointed out to them. However there are some motorists who will deliberately try to evade paying for fuel.
"We are encouraging forecourt owners to take measures to ensure that drive-offs are kept to a minimum. This can include displaying clear signs around the pumps asking motorists to ensure they have the necessary funds to pay for their fuel.
"Often customers will fill up at the pumps and then purchase other items inside. By the time they reach the checkout they may have forgotten about their fuel purchase.
“Managers should encourage staff to ask everyone who approaches the counter if they have purchased fuel thereby saving any hassle or embarrassment.
"Staff should also be vigilant to activity on the forecourt and report anything suspicious to the police immediately. Don't forget to note down details such as registration numbers and a description of the driver.
“Anyone who thinks they can get away with stealing fuel is mistaken. Many places have CCTV in operation and nine times out of ten we are able to identify your car and track you down. Don't take the chance."
