COOKSTOWN is among the top three locations in Northern Ireland for housing sex offenders.
More convicted offenders live in Belfast, Portadown and Cookstown than anywhere else in Northern Ireland due to the uneven spread of supervised accommodation, a report has claimed.

A report by Criminal Justice Inspector Kit Chivers praised the standards but raised concern that they were not evenly spread across Northern Ireland.

“They do not afford an even geographical spread, with two located in rural towns and the other four unevenly distributed in Belfast,” he said.

“This can lead to clustering of offenders after they leave the APs (approved premises).

“While the criminal justice agencies and Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE) have plans to address this problem it will be some time before any impact might be noticed.”

Last year 191 offenders were admitted to the hostels, with 226 leaving.
