A FORMER minister of Union Road and Lecumpher Churches, Rev Norman McAuley, must wait for a month to learn whether he is the new Presbyterian moderator.
Rev McAuley, minister of Greenwell Street, Newtownards, tied with the Rev Norman Hamilton, minister of Ballysillan, Belfast, in this week’s election.

It is the third time in nine years the election for the moderator has ended in a tied vote.

Each received five nominations. The other nine votes from Ireland’s 19 presbyteries were divided among three other candidates.

The presbyteries will be asked to vote again in March on the two tied candidates.

Rev McAuley is considered the more theologically conservative candidate while Rev Hamilton is a well known evangelical, considered by some to be on the progressive wing of evangelicalism.
