POLICE in Cookstown are warning people to be aware of an advertising scam which is circulating.
The PSNI says a business owner was contacted recently by a person attempting to sell advertising space in a ‘police’ or ‘crime prevention’ magazine.
This magazine does not exist, say the police, and is in no way associated with or endorsed by the PSNI or other police service. The ‘police magazine’ angle is used as a ploy to gain a degree of credibility and make people drop their guard.
The PSNI advises people in Cookstown to never disclose financial details or make commitments to pay by credit or debit card to cold callers no matter who they claim to represent.
Reputable organisations will give you the chance to think about your response.
Anyone who has been approached in this way or who is concerned should contact police in Cookstown on 0845 600 8000.
