Boxing legend Barry McGuigan has paid tribute to Clonoe Boxing Club founder Frank Gervin, who was laid to rest on Wednesday.

The MBE and veteran boxing coach set up the club - which went on to train champions - with his wife Susan in 1972.

A true and utter gentleman and gave everything of himself to people - Barry McGuigan on Frank Gervin

The couple also fostered hundreds of children down through the years.

Speaking about “one of life’s true gentlemen”, Mr McGuigan said: “I knew Frank back in the seventies so we have know each other for a very very long time.

“I have great respect for him... I used to go up and spar with him.

“It’s very sad,” he went on, “I knew that he hadn’t been well.

“He has given so many young people a chance to fulfil their dreams in sport - particularly boxing.

“A giving guy, and I know that he also fostered children so ultimately [he was] the real sort of altruistic gentleman.

“A true and utter gentleman and gave everything of himself to people, young people and kids that realised their potential in boxing.

“One of life’s true gentlemen,” he added.
