SEVERAL former employees of FG Wilson (now Caterpillar) in Larne have benefitted from a programme designed to improve their employability prospects.

Last year, hundreds of workers lost their jobs at the Caterpillar sites in Larne, Monkstown and Belfast as the company laid off almost a third of its workforce in Northern Ireland.

And in the hope of securing new jobs, some of the former employees have taken part in the Exploring Enterprise programme, which is delivered by LEDCOM and funded by the Department of Employment and Learning and Larne Borough Council.

The aim of the programme is to improve the employability of disadvantaged clients through the provision of training and mentoring.

As a result of the scheme, two former employees have secured temporary work with P&O Ferries, while a third secured work placement and is exploring the option of emigrating to New Zealand. Another is volunteering in the local Sure Start project and is looking at retraining in social work.
