A STEWARTSTOWN man’s smart kitchen design has beat off stiff competition to win a national award.

Ivan Burrows, who works at Alwood in Lurgan, is the winner of the Kitchen Designer of the year award, projects up to £30,000 at the national kbbreview Awards 2012.

“Winning the award has been a great morale boost for me and the company,” Ivan said.

“The presentation night was brilliant and there were over 700 people there. I was one of four finalists from across the UK and Ireland and I didn’t know I had won until they announced it at the awards, it was a big surprise!”

Ivan impressed the judges with his design of a bold coloured kitchen, with the colours and textures being the principal feature. His design was assessed not just on the aesthetic and practical results of his design, but also on his use of budget, his problem solving skills and his ability to meet the client’s brief.

Ivan, 49, has worked for Alwood for 15 years and this is the second kbbreview award the company has achieved as well as several other industry awards. The company which has been going for almost 80 years, has its own on-site manufacturing team and specialises in bespoke kitchen design and installation.

“The design was for two clients who I had created a design for after visiting their kitchen and seeing the tremendous view they had. I recommended they replace the windows for something more open and designed the kitchen around that. We used amethyst colours to bring the outside in, to reflect the lavender in the landscape,” he said.

“I’ve worked in furniture all my life. I worked as a factory manager for most of that, and only moved into sales and design three years ago. The company are very knowledgeable and versatile so it’s been great working here as a designer.”

Tim Wallace, editor of kbbreview, says: “I would like to wish a well deserved congratulations to Ivan and Alfie for their success at this year’s kbbreview Awards. They have all worked extremely hard and I look forward to seeing their work in the future. Well done Ivan and everyone at Alwood!”
