Call for council and public to keep Mid Ulster towns tidy

Cllr McFlynn said, “In recent weeks a number of Magherafelt residents have contacted me to complain that the town centre was not being maintained in the same clean and tidy manner as Cookstown.

“Although part of this was because of the ongoing work of redesigning the town centre in Magherafelt, there was a concern that the town looked more untidy, less clean, and the grass was not being cut in areas where the Council has responsibility.

“As a result I have contacted Council staff and asked that specific areas are targeted for litter removal, in particular Station Road, Ballyheiffer Road, Searsons Road and the Coolshinney area.

“The Council has already dealt with a number of fly-tipping incidents in Lester Gardens in the town.

“I have also asked for the entrances to our villages, and for all areas across the district, to be maintained to a high standard as it gives a good impression to visitors and is good for residents and the general public.

“Once the public realm scheme in Magherafelt is completed in early December maintaining a clean and tidy town centre should be easier to achieve.

“I would also take the opportunity to remind the public that they have a responsibility not to litter. Not only is it an offence, but it increases the cost to the Council, and all rate payers, of keeping Mid Ulster clean and tidy.”
