A CCTV camera is to be erected in Draperstown town centre in an effort to deter “boy racers”.
Members of the local District Policing Partnership heard new cameras would also be put up at Rainey Street car park in Magherafelt outside the entrance to Dorman’s nightclub and at Union Road park.
Area Commander chief inspector Sam Donaldson expressed the hope that the cameras would act as a deterrent to crime.
SDLP Councillor Kate Lagan queried whether CCTV would have any impact on the situation in Draperstown.
“It doesn’t appear to have worked in Maghera where you can have up to 30 cars rallying in the car park,” she claimed.
Councillor Lagan expressed concern that there have been no prosecutions and “nothing appears to be done” by the police regarding Maghera.
While she accepted that CCTV had an affect on reducing assaults, it did not appear to have the same effect on boy racers.
The chief inspector said he took issue with the claim that nothing was being done to deter the problem in Maghera.
He explained that it was more difficult to identify someone involved in vehicle crime that would stand up in court.
