Mid Ulster MLA Patsy McGlone has revealed that the £53m set aside by the Westminster Government for Desertcreat community college is now gone.

After weeks of asking whether the funds were still available, he told the Mail that: “Whenever I asked the question, today is the first that we heard that it’s gone - £53 million.

“You feel that it’s death by a thousand cuts for this project and it’s yet another negative news story associated with the project - a project that people had invested so much in, not least of all their time and effort.

“Another £53 that should have been spent here is gone.

“This way this has been handled is just text book case in how to do things badly, just sheer incompetence from the very word go.

“It is deeply, deeply disappointing.”

When asked whether Stormont’s share of the funding was still available, he said: “I presume it is, but it’s best that I let the Department answer that themselves.”

No one at the Department of Justice could be reached for comment.
