Dr Stevens is currently the Medical Director for the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust since his appointment in January 2007.

Before this he held the roles of Deputy Medical Director and Director of Risk and Occupational Health with the Royal Group of Hospitals Trust.

Bob McCann, Chairman of the Northern Health and Social Care Trust, said: “I am delighted to welcome Dr Stevens to the Northern Trust. He brings with him significant expertise, knowledge and leadership and will continue to improve performance within the Trust.

“I would like to thank Paul Cummings and Mary Hinds who have, over the last year, made substantial progress within the Trust as part of the turnaround process.

“I have every confidence that Dr Stevens will build on this work, particularly the implementation of phase II of the Trust Improvement Plan. The Trust, including its Board, Senior Management Team and workforce, look forward to working with him and securing on a consistent basis the quality of care we would expect for our families and ourselves across all of the services we provide.”

Welcoming the appointment, Health Minister Edwin Poots said: “Dr Stevens takes on an exciting, yet demanding, role as Chief Executive of the Northern Trust. He has vast experience both as a clinician and a health service manager which will be instrumental in his approach to leading the Trust in a period of dynamic change.

“He shares my vision of better health and social care and will prioritise its delivery through the continued implementation of Transforming Your Care. I wish him every success in his new role.”

Dr Stevens is expected to take up his post during the forthcoming summer period.
