TWO Desertmartin teachers have been praised for their cross-cimmunity educational work.

John Jon McWilliams and Lynn Fullerton were awarded Teachers of the Year in the NI4Kids Family Awards.

The nomination for the Desertmartin Primary, Church of Ireland and Knocknagin Primary, Catholic school principals was made in recognition that they have taken the innovative step of sharing classes in each other’s schools as well as resources.

Although they now have acquired a shared teacher between them, the principals have used this extra resource to allow the children to work from both schools and have daily contact.

The nominator said they have gone the extra mile on everything and have succeeded in bringing the communities together with each attending the other’s concerts and also having a joint carol service.

“These principals deserve recognition for their shared vision and how tightly they work together in making this ‘first of its kind’ project work,” they said.”Without their dedicated and unfaltering commitment this could not work and is an example of what is possible in our communities today.”
