Twenty-nine-year-old Reggie Diamond, from Oakvale Terrace in the village, near Maghera, suffered fatal injuries in a one-vehicle crash on the Curragh Road outside Coleraine on Saturday morning.

He was taken to hospital in a critical condition but later died.

It was the second fatal accident on the Curragh Road in the last two weeks - pensioner Jim McCollum (75), died when his Landrover jeep collided with a tree on March 7.

A funeral service for Mr Diamond will be held in St Paul’s Church, Articlave, Castlerock, at 12 noon tomorrow, followed by interment in the adjourning churchyard.

DUP Mid Ulster MLA Keith Buchanan expressed sympathy with the Diamond family.

“It’s really tragic that yet another young person has lost their life on our roads,” he said.

SDLP Councillor Martin Kearney extended his “deepest sympathy” to the family on his untimely death. He said the accident was more shocking in that Mr McCollum had died on the same stretch of road two weeks ago.

The PSNI has appealed for anyone who was travelling on the Curragh Road at the time of the crash and who witnessed the collision to contact officers in Coleraine or the Collision Investigation Unit on 101 quoting reference number 481 of 18/03/17.

Mr Diamond’s death brings the number of people who have died on roads in Northern Ireland so far this year to 11.
