German visitors welcomed to town

ON Thursday 17th May, Cookstown District Council hosted a delegation of teachers and business representatives from Magdeburg, Germany.

The delegation formed part of an Exchange Programme to find out more about Cookstown’s vibrant small business economy and education sectors.

Welcoming the visitors, Councillor Sean Clarke, Chairman, Cookstown District Council said: “Council has particularly enjoyed a number of exchange visits between Cookstown and Germany. It gives me great pleasure to welcome this delegation from Magdeburg, Germany, to explore and develop future opportunities for education and business between our two regions. I have no doubt that as we share our experiences and learn from each other, this will only serve to enrich each of our local communities”.

The delegation was then briefed by a number of speakers representing the business and education sectors to provide guests with an insight as to how the local economy functions. Speakers included;

Fiona McKeown, Economic Development Manager, Cookstown District Council provided an overview of the Cookstown economy and Council’s business support programmes.

Ciaran Higgins, Manager, Cookstown Enterprise Centre advised of the business support available through Cookstown Enterprise Centre.

Eleanor McAlister, Careers Advisor, South West College provided details of the NI education system and the business/engineering courses available at South West College.

Paul Cairns, South West College provided an overview on the services provided at the InnoTech Centre, Cookstown.

Claire Balmer, advised on the services provided to industry by the Sector Skills Council for Science, Engineering & Manufacturing Technologies (SEMTA NI) and

Claire Hughes, Manager, First Trust Bank, Dungannon provided employer feedback following German student placements within the bank.

The event was heralded a resounding success and provided the arena for the development of valuable networks and business linkages between Cookstown and Magdeburg, Germany.
