Good neighbours as store wins award!

SPAR in Magherafelt, part of the Kenny’s Group, has picked up the award for Neighbourhood Store of the Year.

Convenience, forecourt and wine retailer, the Kenny’s Group picked up the award ‘Neighbourhood Store of the Year’ for SPAR Magherafelt and for the whole group as well as ‘Training Initiative of the Year’ and the most prestigious award of the evening ‘Overall Retailer of the Year’, with SPAR Garvagh being a worthy finalist.

Director of the Group Kenny Bradley said he was delighted with the triple win.

“To win one award was a delight but to come away with three, blew us all away,” he said.

“I am thrilled as the last couple of years we have put a lot of time, effort and financial investment into co-branding our stores in order to enhance the value of SPAR and developing bespoke training to provide our customers with a community store that has customer service to suit.”

Not only does the group operate out of retail units but has recently taken on the world of e-commerce.

Last year the group started to trade wine online at www.homedeliverywine.com providing customers with a service that delivers goods straight to the door with a range that suits all tastes and pockets. It is down to this entrepreneurial drive that keeps this group ahead of its competitors.

Kenny added: “It is hard, exceptionally hard, for retailers as customers are constantly looking for the best bargain, which lowers the retailers profit as well as increasing rates, the forthcoming tobacco ban, charges for plastic bags ever increasing waste tax – it’s one battle after the other.

“However we decided to diversify to remove some of these costs and delved into e-commerce invested heavily in staff training and gave our stores a new community look and feel. I firmly believe that these ongoing accolades can be attributed to the staff’s teamwork, loyalty, respect and ownership values that are at the core of the business.

“Despite trading being challenging we have looked at this as an opportunity and grabbed it and hope that the future will hold more exciting and innovating things pushing local independent retailing to the forefront.”
