The group meets on the 3rd Tuesday of every month at the Gables on the Cookstown-Dungannon Road (A29) usually at around 8pm.

A spokesperson for the group said: “We would like to invite anyone new to join and you will be made to feel very welcome. It is a drop in format so you only need to attend meetings when convenient. If you have any queries please contact Deirdre on 07974081228 or make contact through the Down’s Syndrome Association in Belfast on 02890 665260.”

The support group has been in existence for many years. Currently attended and supported by 16 families, it is a local branch of the Northern Ireland Down’s Syndrome Association, and always welcomes any new families who would like to join. The group also helps with much-needed equipment that is not provided by the health services.

The members of the group with Down Syndrome vary in age from young children to varying stages of adulthood so the group has vast experience and a lovely mixture of ages.

The parents in the group support each other by coming together to discuss health, education, diet, transitioning to adulthood and promoting independence as well as just having a general catch-up.

There is a very strong camaraderie amongst the group with all parents having the same ethos to do the very best they can for their children.
