THE Highlands will come to the lowlands next week when the Third Annual Highland Games and Strongman Rural Ruction takes place in Maghera.

The competition takes place on Saturday 17 September at the The Curragh, which is just over a mile from Maghera and can be accessed from Crew Road and Station Road.

Organiser George Shiels explained what’s in store for the event. “This will be our third annual highland games, which goes under the name of Rural Ructions and this year we have the finale of the Highland Games Series Warrior Trophy. Last year we introduced a new element in the form of a Strongman competition and this year we will host Ireland’s Strongest 4 Man Team 2011,” he said.

“The event runs from 12 noon - 5pm and commences with the Highland Games followed by the Strongman team event.

This leaves plenty of time for patrons to report home and return for the Saturday night concert at 8pm, which will feature May McFetridge and band.”

George continued: “There will be fun activities for children such as the Funzone Inflatables, and this year we have for first time Corbally Mobile Funfarm which features animals such as llamas, pot-bellied pigs and much more. There will be entertainment in the marquee for the mammies and daddies and grannies and granda’s and better still, there will be loads of good country sit-down food.”
