Dungannon’s waiting list for social housing is at its highest ever level, prompting alarm from housing campaigners.

According to the latest figures released at the Northern Ireland Assembly, there are currently 1117 Dungannon people waiting for housing, one of the highest levels in Northern Ireland, and almost double the total in 2005.

The news comes after it was revealed that funding for a special scheme to help local people live independently has been frozen for seven years.

Housing campaigners have gathered at Stormont to seek assurances on the future of the Supporting People programme. which has invested £902k in supported housing schemes across the Dungannon district.

The programme is currently subject to a government review, and campaigners are also concerned about the potential impact of NI Executive spending cuts on the Programme.

They claim the funding squeeze will threaten the quality and long-term viability of the service.
