Sinn Fein councillor for the area, Cathal Mallaghan, said his thoughts and those of the entire Pomeroy community were with Mr McAleer’s family at this time.

“Barney was working with his brother getting the silage into round bales when the accident took place”, Cllr Mallaghan explained.

“His family would be very well known in the area, and his death is a big shock for the whole farming community.

“This is an extremely busy time of year for farmers, everybody is working long hours trying their best to get the silage ready for the winter feed.
