Charges have been dropped against a man charged with the murder of prison officer David Black.

Mr Black, 52, who hailed from Cookstown was shot dead as he travelled along the M1 motorway to work in Maghaberry Prison in November 2012.

Sean McVeigh, of Victoria Street, Lurgan was charged with the murder of the father of two following his arrest in February this year.

It was confirmed today (Tuesday July 1) that charges against Mr McVeigh were to be withdrawn.

In a statement from Mr McVeigh’s solicitors KRW Law, they said “from as early as the day our client was charged, he put forward an alibi.”

They added that Mr McVeigh would now be “instigating civil proceedings against the PSNI and PPS for the time he has spent in custody as result of same.”
