THE recent Christmas food market in Magherafelt attracted 16,500 people into the town over a two day period - achieving the event’s objective of increasing footfall in the town.

The local District Council heard at its monthly meeting that the Meadowlane shopping centre had an extra 3,000 people in its shopping mall during the time of the market.

Council also recorded footfall in the town during the event. Comparing the footfall to the same time in 2010, the research showed an increase of 58 per cent.

It is estimated that the Christmas market had an added economic benefit of £297,000 to Magherafelt.

Council officials are now planning to review all the events that took place and carry out a similar exercise.
