A FACEBOOK page has been set up to support Dungannon woman Michaella McCollum and her co-accused Melissa Reid, from Scotland as they face drug trafficking charges in Peru.

The page entitled ‘Free Melissa Reid and Michaella McCollum’ was only set up on Tuesday (13th August) on the social networking site but already has more than 2,200 ‘likes’.

The page has generated hundreds of comments already about the pair who were arrested at Peru airport last week after searches found £1.5m worth of cocaine in their luggage.

Both girls maintain their innocence and have said that they were forced at gunpoint by a Columbian gang to smuggle the drugs out of Peru.

Michaella, aged 20 and Melissa aged 19 were stopped as they tried to board a flight to Madrid. Michaella had been working over the summer in Ibiza, and her family from Dungannon had issued an appeal for her to get in contact via facebook last week as she had not been in touch for around 11 days.

Both girls were due to appear before a Peruvian judge yesterday (Wednesday) but the hearing has been delayed until next week as there was no interpreter available.

It is understood Michaella’s family are making arrangements to travel to Peru to support her and the family’s solicitor confirmed he was arranging legal support for Michaella in Peru.
