Magherafelt man called police ‘scumbags’ during car park incident

Magherafelt Courthouse.

Magherafelt Courthouse.

A YOUNG Magherafelt man who tried to headbutt a police officer during an incident in the town’s Rainey Street car park, was ordered to carry out 120 hours of Community Service when he appeared at the local Magistrates Court.

Damian Patrick McClenaghan (20), of Parkmore Close, admitted charges of assaulting the officer, assaulting a civilian detention officer, disorderly behaviour and resisting police on February 24.

The court heard that sentencing had been deferred in the case to monitor McClenaghan’s behaviour.

A defence barrister said the defendant had kept out of trouble since the incident last February.

A PPS lawyer explained the defendant had approached the police “aggressively” in the car park, calling them “PSNI scumbags.”

District Judge Alan White said he was glad the defendant had taken the opportunity given by the previous District Judge to show that he could stay out of trouble.
