A 41-year-old man has appeared in court on charges arising out of an alleged incident at Upperlands.

Bernard Lavery, no fixed address, is accused of entering premises of W Clark & Son at The Green, Upperlands and causing criminal damage on June 25.

He is also charged with attempted arson at the Old Mill Cafe and stealing about £415 in cash on the same date.

An investigating police officer told the court that he believed he could connect the accused with the charges.

A defence lawyer said no application would be made for bail.

However, he expressed concern about the defendant’s mental health and asked for the prison authorities to address any problems he might have.

Lavery was remanded, in custody, to appear at Magherafelt Magistrates Court by videolink on July 23.
