A MAN who shoved a police officer on the chest as if to push him away, was given a Conditional Discharge for two years when he appeared at Magherafelt Magistrates Court.

Kevin McDonnell (20), of Mullaghnamoyagh Road, Portglenone, admitted charges of assault and disorderly behaviour outside licensed premises at Garden Street, Magherafelt, on March 9 last year.

A prosecuting lawyer explained the struggle broke out after the defendant who appeared drunk and agitated, tried to gain entrance to the premises.

She claimed McDonnell grabbed an officer by the both wrists and a struggle ensued which continued on to the public road.

The lawyer said other police officers had to intervene and defendant was taken home.

Defence barrister Liam McStay said defendant’s behaviour had been “grossly inappropriate in the circumstances.”

Mr McStay said McDonnell was young man who had studied for a sports diploma and was actively seeking employment.
