Mid-Ulster Ulster Unionist MLA Sandra Overend has welcomed the announcement that the £190,000 road improvement package for the Fivemilestraight from the Glenshane Road to the Brackaghreilly Road is to move into its second phase.

Mrs Overend, who is Assembly Private Secretary to the Minister for Regional Development, commented:

“I welcome the Minister’s investment of £190,000 on this scheme, once more demonstrating his commitment to improving the Mid-Ulster road network. This work will enhance road safety along the Five Mile Straight which carries a large volume of traffic travelling towards the Glenshane Pass, particularly at peak times.

“Initial work started on this route on March 3, with the scheme expected to take four weeks to complete. There will be lane closures to allow the completion of the majority of this work, with a one week road closure necessary to facilitate the final surfacing, scheduled to take placed between 24 and 29 March. Diversions will be signposted on Glenshane Road southwards to A29 Tobermore Road via Tobermore and northwards to Lisnamuck Road.

Sinn Fein MLA Ian Milne also welcomed the road works. “This work is long overdue. It is a very busy stretch of road and the improvements will be off great benefit to road users and residents alike.”

Roads Minister Danny Kennedy added: “This is a significant investment and will greatly improve the strength and surface quality of these busy routes within the Mid-Ulster area.”
