A Ballyronan company has been scammed out of £5,500 after a conman used a stolen credit card to obtain goods.
Sean Cassidy, Managing Director of Moss Tile and Bathroom Centre, is urging other businesses to be vigilant after a conman, purporting to be working for a contractor, telephoned from England and placed a substantial order for heated towel rails.
“I want to warn people in the area so they don’t become victims like I did. I lost over £5,000 and I think it’s important that business owners are vigilant,” said Mr Cassidy.
SDLP Mid Ulster MLA Patsy McGlone has pointed out that business owners must protect themselves from this type of cunning scam.
“It’s tough enough for many businesses, and this is one thing less they need, or should have to deal with.
Mr McGlone said it wasn’t always easy to spot these scams, but he urges businesses to be on their guard and exercise extra caution when taking orders over the phone.
