AN All-Ireland tin whistle champion, Roisin McCloskey, has been honoured by Magherafelt District Council.

Roisin, from Clady, won the 2013 championship in the Slow Air (15-18 year) category.

Council Chairperson Councillor Catherine Elattar, who hosted a civic reception, spoke of Roísin’s success not only at the Derry Fleadh, but also winning the All Ireland Championship back in 2007.

She said that Roísin started playing the tin whistle at the age of seven and quickly developed a love and passion for the instrument.

Referring to her completing her Tin Whistle diploma from the London College of Music where she had been examined by the Head Examiner. This Examiner was so impressed by her music, that he commented particularly on her dexterity, breath control, range and use of embellishments, and producing tones which was were both beautiful and haunting.

The Chairperson in her speech also referred to another Title that Roísin had won back in 2011 that of “Young Musician of the Bann”. Not only did she won the audience with her astonishing playing but also with her deep knowledge and understanding of her tunes.

In conclusion she congratulated her again on her achievements and wished her good luck in her future musical career.
