THE efforts of a community group have ensured that Castledawson will be transformed into a sea of twinkling white light come Monday (December 9), where two separate Christmas ‘switch-ons’ will take place.
Thanks to Peace III funding, secured by Lower Castledawson Community Association, Main Street is set to be illuminated as never before, with icicle-type lighting suspended from the buildings.
And, it is anticipated, that a carnival-type atmosphere will envelop the village, where a candle-lit procession will be held, headed by Santa and Mickey and Minnie Mouse.
Fiona Fullerton, Chair of LCCA, explains that the festivities will begin at Riverpark Community House at 6.30pm where the first switch-on will take place.
“Lady Moyola has kindly donated a tree for the third year,” she said. “The lights will be switched on at Riverpark House, and will be followed by a short carol service by Aughrim Gospel Hall Bible Club.”
The second switch-on, she says, will take place at ‘The Gravel’ and will be performed by Irish superbike champion Nico Mawhinney.
“There will also be carol singing by children from the two primary schools, followed by refreshments in Christ Church Parish Hall.”
Fiona adds: “Everyone is really excited - this is a big event for Castledawson, a real cross-community affair. Representatives of all the groups we’ve worked work have been invited to celebrate with us. A big thank-you goes to Magherafelt District Council for all their help.”
