Police say the woman who died following a road traffic accident in Magherafelt earlier today was 81-year-old Rhoda Kearney, who came from the town.
She died at the scene after she was struck by a lorry on Broad Street.
PSNI inspector Alan Hutton said: “Shortly after 12:10pm, it was reported a Volvo articulated lorry was involved in the incident.
“The Broad Street, Magherafelt is closed in both directions and motorists are advised to seek alternative main routes for their journey.”
Local SDLP Councillor Jim Campbell extended his sympathy to the woman’s family and the lorry driver.
“It’s a terrible tragedy for all involved,” he said.
DUP Councillor Anne Forde said it was “a very sad day for Magherafelt.”
“Sadly we see this type of accident all too frequently on our roads and I would appeal to all road users to exercise care,” she added.
