Councillor Gabhan McFalone welcomes name change

MAGHERAFELT Sinn Féin Councillor Gabhán McFalone has welcomed the recommendation by the Electoral Commissioner, Richard Mackenzie, to change the name a newly established District Electoral Area (DEA) from Upperlands to Carntogher.

The DEA is part of the proposed Mid-Ulster Council which is being formed as part of the Review of Public Admistration.

The Carntogher DEA will host the electoral wards of Lower Glenshane, Maghera, Swatragh, Tamlaght O’Crilly and Valley. The proposal to change the naming of the DEA which was submitted by Sunnyside Community Association (Maghera), received major support from community and voluntary groups throughout the DEA.

Cllr. McFalone, who gave strong and robust evidence on behalf of Sunnyside Community Association at an Inquiry regarding boundary changes told the MAIL: “Carntogher is an area of great geographical and cultural importance to many people living in the DEA. ‘The Carn’ is a dominant feature on our landscape and can be seen from all parts of our DEA, making the new name more easy to identify with than the name originally proposed by officials working on the boundary changes which will usher in a new era in local government.

“Carntogher has made its impact on community life throughout all the electoral wards to be included as many of our local housing estates and developments make reference to ‘The Carn’ in the names that they have been given. For example we have Carn View in Mayogall (Lavey). Carntogher is well known for its contribution to the renaissance of the Irish language as well as culture and music.”

Support for Sunnyside Communuity Association submission’s also came from Sinn Féin councillors Kate McEldowney and Seán McPeake as well as the party’s Mid Ulster MP, Francie Molloy MP.
