THE funeral took place yesterday (Wednesday) of renowned Cookstown undertaker Robin Steenson who tragically died following a collision on the MI on Sunday evening.
A keen motorcyclist, Mr Steenson (71) from Tullywiggan Road, was the husband of Gillian and father of Bryan and Helen, father-in-law of Carole and devoted grandfather of Adam, Joshua, Rachel and Matthew.
He had been returning from his monthly Sunday motorcycle run with three colleagues from Cookstown Motorcycle Touring Club, when the accident happened on the M1 near Dungannon.
Minister of First Cookstown Presbyterian Church, Rev Dr J Isaac Thompson, who knew Mr Steenson for 18 years, said he was not only a colleague in his role as an undertaker, but also a friend and neighbour.
Mr Steenson was a member of Cookstown Methodist Church and his minister Rev Stephen Sheerin also paid tribute to him, emphasising that he was a man of great character, great sympathy and great compassion.
Mr Steenson’s business R Steenson and Son dates back to 1905, and now based at Loy Street, children Bryan and Helen are the fourth generation to take the helm.
The private service for Mr Steenson took place yesterday (Wednesday) at the funeral home.
Meanwhile, at the time of going to press, Kevin Cassidy (39) son of former Cookstown SDLP Councillor Peter Cassidy remained in a critical condition in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.
A married man with two children, Mr Cassidy was involved in the collision which claimed the life of a lorry driver at Ballynakilly Road, Coalisland, on Monday morning.
Mr Cassidy, a former Tyrone referee, and former committee member and player at Rock GFC, underwent over six hours of surgery following the crash.
