Big switch on in Cookstown

THE Big Switch On of the Cookstown’s fantastic Christmas lights is here! This evening, Thursday 29th November at 8pm our streets will come alive in the most spectacular display in the country, signalling that Christmas is really just around the corner!

The fun starts at 7pm, with Cool FM DJ Pete Snodden taking charge on stage to keep everyone entertained. He will introduce musical performances from a live band and a slapstick performance from circus duo Babcock and Bobbins around 7.15pm.

Next up we are delighted that some of the cast from Cookstown High School will be stopping by to give us a snapshot of their Christmas with Dickens production which will be at the Burnavon from Wednesday 12th to Friday 14th December. You can take in a few excerpts from their forthcoming musical drama around 7.30pm.

In the build-up to the switch-on, of course there will be loads to keep kids of all ages amused - game and food stalls, free face painting and a host of street entertainment – walkabout Christmas characters, a fire juggler, fire hula hooper and stilt walkers. And last but not least Tamlaghtmore Silver Band will be dropping in to play for the waiting crowd.

As for Santa, whose arrival is always the highlight of the evening, his very special mode of transport is being kept top secret for now! So you will just have to come along to see what it is for yourself!

Santa will join the chairman of Cookstown District Council, Councillor Tony Quinn on stage just after 8pm. They will be in the very glamorous company of the current Tyrone Rose of Tralee, Catherine Sherry, who is also coming along to join in the fun of the eveining. Just after 8pm, together they will press the magic red button and the town will light up in its spectacular Christmas display.

So be sure not to miss it - the Big Switch On as Cookstown Centre lights up for Christmas on Thursday 29th November. Fun starts at 7pm and lights switch-on is at 8pm.

Cookstown District Council would like to remind motorists that road diversions will be in place and William Street will be closed to through traffic on 29th November from 6.00pm, re-opening at 10.00pm
