Celtic out of cup at hands of Tandragee

Tandragee Rovers 2

Cookstown Celtic 0

Cookstown Celtic travelled to Tandragee to take on Tandragee Rovers Reserves in the Mid Ulster Shield.

After a cagey start by both teams it was Celtic who created the first opening when good link up play from McCloskey and Doherty led to McOscar being released into the box only to see his shot go wide off the mark.

Tandragee started to come into the game and were unlucky not to take the lead when a fine effort from a bicycle kick flew just over the bar.

The game was very competitive and was swinging from one end to the other when McOscar was again released only this time he was fouled by the on rushing keeper and the referee had no option but to point to the spot. The task fell to Doherty to open the scoring however his weak penalty was easily saved by the Tandragee keeper as the half ended scoreless.

The second half started similar to the first with neither team looking to give anything away. Again it was Celtic who had the first chance of the half when a McVey header was well saved and the Tandragee keeper produced a wonderful save to deny Doherty from the rebound.

Celtic were snuffing out any Tandragee attacks with McGahan and Ryan keeping the Tandragee strikers very quiet. Celtic thought they had taken the lead when a pin point cross Kelly was met by Maguire and his bullet header was somehow kept out by the impressive Tandragee keeper.

With the ninety minutes failing to provide a goal the game entered extra time and it was Tandragee who started the better and forced McElhone into a fine save. Tandragee finally broke the deadlock when their striker fired in at the second attempt despite the best efforts of McElhone.

Celtic continued to press for the equaliser in the closing stages of extra time but again found the Tandragee keeper in top form with him denying McVey and Kelly. Inevitably Celtic were caught on the counter attack in the closing minutes as they pushed for the equaliser and conceded a further two goals to end a disappointing day.
