A COOKSTOWN photographer has scooped the top prize in this year’s Belfast Zoological Gardens annual photographic competition.

Colin Kells’ winning shot of a majestic Moloch gibbon won over the panel of judges in the ‘best club photographer category’ and bagged him a cash prize of £175.

Mark Challis, zoo manager, said this is now the 29th year in which they have run the annual photographic competition and its popularity has continued to grow.

“We were overwhelmed and delighted with the quality of the entries and it was very difficult to judge such a high standard of photography.

“I would like to take this opportunity to not only congratulate our winners but to also thank everyone who entered the competition,” he said.

The competition drew entries from more than 500 budding photographers across Northern Ireland who captured a selection of different animals ranging from tigers to penguins.

Belfast Zoo is home to more than 1,000 animals and 150 different species. The majority of the animals are in danger in their natural habitat.

The winners were announced at an awards ceremony in the elephant and giraffe house at the weekend.

Visitors can see a selection of the photographs in the Lion’s Den Restaurant and on the zoo’s website - www.belfastzoo.co.uk.
