CHRISTMAS in Cookstown gets officially underway this year with the Big Switch On of the town’s Christmas lights at 8pm on Thursday 29th November!

Once the town’s streets come alive in what has to be the most spectacular display in the country, you will know for sure that Christmas is really just around the corner.

So why not get into the festive season in good time, wrap up warm and come join in the fun which starts at 7pm.

This year Cookstown District Council are delighted to welcome Cool FM DJ Pete Snodden, to keep everyone entertained and take charge on stage.

Pete will introduce live musical performances from Michael Glackin and friends and a slapstick circus performance from acclaimed duo Babcock and Bobbins.

In the build-up to the switch-on, there will be loads to keep kids of all ages amused - street stalls, free face painting and a host of Christmas and Cartoon characters – watch out for Rudy Two Shoes, the Gingerbread Man and the Christmas Bear to name just a few of the Friendly Faces personalities coming along.

You can also look forward to street performances from a fire juggler and a fire hula hooper as well as stiltwalkers and walkabouts, courtesy of Open Door, the creation of Carol Doey.

And, last but not least, Tamlaghtmore Silver Band will be dropping in to play for the waiting crowd.

Of course the highlight of the evening will be the arrival of Santa himself, this year aboard a very special mode of transport, which is being kept top secret for now!

You will just have to come along to see what happens for yourself!

Santa will join the chairman of Cookstown District Council, Councillor Tony Quinn, on stage just after 8pm. They will be in the extremely glamorous company of the current Tyrone Rose of Tralee, Catherine Sherry, who is also coming along to join in the action.

Just after 8pm, together they will press the magic red button and the town will light up in its spectacular Christmas display.

So take a note right now to be there for the Big Switch On as Cookstown Centre lights up for Christmas on Thursday 29th November. Fun starts at 7pm and lights switch-on is at 8pm.

Cookstown District Council would like to remind motorists that road diversions will be in place and William Street will be closed to through traffic on 29th November from 6pm, re-opening at 10pm.
