Council hold minutes silence for David Black

COOKSTOWN District Council held a minutes silence in memory of murdered prison officer David Black.

Members stood in memory of the 52 year-old dad-of-two from the Orritor Road area of the town, murdered on November 1st at Tuesday night’s full council meeting.

All parties offered their condolences to Mr Black’s family, including his wife Yvonne and children Kyle (21) and Kyra (17).

On Monday dissident republicans calling themselves ‘the IRA’ claimed responsibility for his murder.

The new paramilitary group is believed to have been formed from an amalgamation of previously disparate dissident republican organisations.

Mr Black was the first prison officer to be murdered in Northern Ireland in almost 20 years.

Council members also offered their condolences to former Cookstown SDLP councillor Mary Baker, whose husband passed away.
