Creativity at Castle Bay

THOSE enterprising folk on the Lough shore have organised some very attractive events to celebrate the life and times

of John Canavan of Killycolpy, the local poet whose 150th anniversary occurs this year.

To many in the Ardboe, Stewartstown and Clonoe area, ‘John Canavan of Killycolpy’ was a vague but significant figure in the lives of their grandparents, or great-grandparents. A decade ago, Marie Heaney, Ardboe native and wife of poet Seamus, was the guest speaker in the Castle Bay centre in Brocagh, when Canavan was rediscovered by a new generation.

She returns on 12 October to deliver the keynote address at the John Canavan weekend, again to be held at the Castle Bay centre. The celebrations continue over the weekend, with a drama event on the evening of 12th, following Marie Heaney’s talk; bus tours of the Ardboe/Clonoe loughshore area which inspired much of Canavan’s verse; musical sessions presented by the local Comhaltas musicians, and a religious commemoration of the poet at Ardboe on Sunday 14th October.

For those who feel the urge to try their hand at creative writing and/or visual art there are opportunities at Castle Bay

not to be missed. Local writer Maura Johnston will host a writers’ workshop consisting of three sessions, on 3rd, 4th and 10th of October. The session begins at 7.00 pm and ends at 8.30 pm each night. Those who are interested are asked to contact Evelyn on 0771 216718. Well known artist Keith Oates will direct the Art workshop. consisting of three sessions: Monday 1st, Tuesday 2nd and Tuesday 9th October. Each session begins at 7.00 pm and those interested are asked to

contact Keith on 028 87738052. The weekend of the John Canavan celebration promises to be entertaining, exciting

and truly memorable. You cannot afford to miss it.
