Detectives welcome manslaughter sentence

DETECTIVES investigating the murder of 24-year-old Michael McLaughlin at Castledawson in August 2010 welcomed the sentencing in Laganside Crown Court today.

Leon Johnston (24) from Toomebridge was sentenced by Lord Justice McLaughlin to an undetermined sentence for manslaughter with the minimum tariff of seven years.

Michael McLaughlin died from his wounds after being stabbed at an apartment complex on the Hillhead Road, Castledawson on August 9 2010.

“This was a callous, brutal, unprovoked killing on a defenceless man. Police welcome the sentence imposed and hope it provides some small degree of comfort to Michael’s family,” said police in a statement.
