Dreary December as jobless rate rises

THE percentage of people without work in the Magherafelt District Council area last month rose by almost four per cent, it has been revealed.

The month of December proved to be a gloomy one for many local people, according to the latest statistics published by the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment.

The figures showed that some 1,217 people accessed unemployment benefits during December in the Magherafelt district, with a significant number of men (878), compared to women (339), claiming financial assistance.

In total, 4.2% of people of working age were without a job in the Magherafelt area, which was an increase of 3.8% from the previous month and 10.1% over the year.

Meanwhile, in the Cookstown Council area, the unemployment rate for the month of December fell by 2.8%, with a total of 1,071 people out of work during this period.

Once again, there were more men (728) than women 343 without a job in the Cookstown Council area in December.

The Dungannon Council area saw no change whatsoever in its jobless rate for the month, with a total of 1,634 people claiming unemployment benefits.
