Duke meets NRC engineering and construction students

STUDENTS and staff at Northern Regional College’s Farm Lodge campus in Ballymena were delighted when His Royal Highness, Duke of York met engineering and construction apprentices beginning the new term at the college’s top industrial facilities.

NRC’s Faculty of Building, Engineering & Science works closely with local manufacturing industries and as the Duke of York toured the workshops including the Toyota Academy and the Michelin Training Centre, he had the opportunity to meet apprentices from Toyota, Michelin, Wrightbus, Ryobi, Schrader and Schlumberger.

The welcoming party included the Minister for Employment & Learning, Dr. Stephen Farry. Dr. Farry said, “This visit recognises the importance and value that apprenticeships bring to individuals, employers and the economy as a whole. Apprenticeships are right at the heart of the kind of economy we want to build: one where young people have the chance to learn skills the economy needs, where we have a highly-skilled workforce, and where we are providing the goods and services the world wants to buy.”

Trevor Neilands Principal and Chief Executive of NRC also chaired a brief discussion on the apprenticeship programme and said:

“His Royal Highness showed a keen interest in the apprenticeship programme which is integral to supporting economic growth, and the links the college has forged with industry at a local and international level. NRC firmly support the partnership approach to skills building and are committed to delivering apprenticeship programmes to the highest industry standards.”
