Electricity poles cut down in Cookstown
FIVE electricity poles were cut down in Cookstown at the weekend, as would-be thieves attempted to steal the metal.
And NIE is appealing to people in the area to be vigilant and to report any damage to the electricity network.
Engineers were called out to the incident at Killycolp Road, late on Friday night (September 28) where they discovered five electricity poles had been cut and left in a very dangerous state.
Two poles had been brought to the ground and the live electricity line broken.
It is thought that the vandals were attempting to steal metal.
Stephen Harper, NIE Duty Incident Manager, said deliberate damage to electricity lines is extremely dangerous.
“The poles that were cut carried live electricity. The vandals involved could have been seriously injured, or indeed killed.
“We are asking the public to be extra vigilant and inform us or the PSNI if they witness any suspicious activity around the electricity network,” he said.
The PSNI is investigating the incident.
Meanwhile, six street lights were damaged in Benburb during an attempt to steal the cable. The incident was reported to police on Friday afternoon. Police are appealing for information.
